Draft loophole gets Olympian first NHL Game
In 1992, two expansion teams were set to make their expansion draft. All teams, except the recently added San Jose Sharks, were allowed to protect 14 skaters and two goalies.
Every team had to make at least one goalie available who had played at least one game the previous season. This led to many teams making trades to add additional goalies to their rosters so they could protect their two preferred goalies. Other teams got creative, such as the Chicago Blackhawks, by signing 1992 United States Olympic starting goalie Ray LeBlanc, just so he could play one game and then be exposed to the expansion draft. This allowed the Blackhawks to protect future Hall of Famers Ed Belfour and Dominik Hasek.
Who was taken first overall in this expansion draft? The Ottawa Senators had the first selection and drafted goalie Peter Sidorkiewicz who would go on to be their starting goalie.
