Game Day – Sens vs. Blues – Dec 14, 2023

A Short history of the blues

The blues emerged from the oppressed, economically disadvantaged African-American communities in the rural southern states of America in the years following the American Civil War (1861–1865). Blues singers were descendants of slaves and elements of their music reach back to African origins, with music that is deeply rooted in social and political history.

Many of the best known blues musicians came from the southern states of America, and some would argue that the Mississippi Delta was the birthplace of the blues. This area had a greater concentration of black people than any other part of the country, and an economy based largely on cotton farming which meant that this was also an area in which segregation and social isolation of black people through lack of economic opportunity was deeply entrenched.

One team will be looking to make the other team sing the blues after tonight’s game.

GAME DAY REPORT

All-Time vs. St. Louis Blues: 19-20-2-1

It’s the return of Vladimir Tarasenko to St. Louis after playing 11 seasons with the club. This is Tarasenko’s first full season away from St. Louis. Ottawa heads on a multi-game road trip before the holidays and their first stop is with a club that removed their head coach. Craig Berube was fired as coach of the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday and replaced by Drew Bannister on an interim basis.

Jiri Smejkal was sent down to the affiliated Belleville Senators while Jacob Larsson was called up yesterday. Mark Kastilic is a game time decision.

Talks about an inverse, the St. Louis Blues have the league’s worst power play while the Ottawa Senators have the league’s worst penalty kill – that should make for some interesting special teams play. St. Louis are at the bottom of the league in average goals scored and in allowing the most goals while Ottawa sits considerably higher.

Game recap – Dec 12 – sens vs. hurricanes

Senators lose at home 4-1 to Hurricanes before departing on extended road trip

The Senators understand they have a tough road trip before the holidays ahead of them and it seemed like they could not focus on their last home game before that trip, falling to the Hurricanes 4-1. Jake Sanderson played his 100th NHL game but ended the night pointless.

Quick Sens Highlights:

  • Josh Norris opened up the scoring at 7:27 in the 1st period but that was the last time Ottawa would be a factor on the scoreboard.
  • The Hurricanes scored 4 unanswered goals, including three goals in the 2nd period.
  • A late penalty shot in the 3rd period by Brady Tkachuk was not enough to change momentum. Goalie Pyotr Kochetkov did a poke check that ended up tripping Tkachuk. A frustrated and angry Tkachuk became emotional before being ejected from the game.
  • Claude Giroux and Erik Brannstrom picked up an assit on Josh Norris’ goal.
  • Joonas Korpisalo recorded the loss making 24 saves with a 4.07 GAA and a .857 SV%.
