Game Day – Sens vs. Ducks – Mar 6, 2024

The PRE-Game

Disney Takes on the NHL

In December 1992, two worlds collided when the NHL awarded Disney its own expansion franchise, who they called the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.  following The Mighty Ducks’ movie success, other regions in the U.S. started to catch on to the hockey craze. One of those regions was southern California, which was in the middle of a hockey boom due in large part to Wayne Gretzky’s 1988 trade from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings.

Disney’s vision was shared by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, who assumed his position a couple of months after Disney was awarded an NHL team. Bettman has a reputation for expanding hockey to non-traditional markets, and during his tenure, the NHL has successfully expanded into states like Florida, Texas and Arizona.

GAME DAY REPORT

Sens vs. Ducks

Last time: Senators lost to the Anaheim Ducks on Feb 15th, 5-1 ending their winning streak. Mason McTavish scored twice against the hometown team and John Gibson stopped all 15 shots before being replaced in the 3rd period by Lukas Dostal.

Game Day: Ottawa is facing a 4 game losing streak and embarks on a California road-trip just before the trade deadline. Speculations are Ottawa will shed some assets by the deadline which would make it difficult for the team to rally together as a group. Ottawa also has a poor record in the West, losing all games on their road trips this year.

Statistically, the Ducks have a better Power Play and Penalty Kill, so Special Teams remain a factor for the Senators. Ottawa can score goals, sitting in the top half of the league while both teams allow goals in bunches as well, sitting next to each other, at the bottom of the league in average goals allowed per game.
