ON THE BENCH
Rick Bowness (1992-1996)
Rick Bowness became the first head coach of the Winnipeg Jets new AHL affiliate, the Sherbrooke Jets in the 1982-83 AHL season, as a player-coach. He became the head coach of the Winnipeg Jets after they fired head coach Dan Maloney mid-season, coaching his first NHL game on February 9, 1989. He left the Jets organization after they hired a new head coach the following season.
Bowness became the head coach of the Boston Bruins AHL affiliate, the Maine Mariners in the 1989-90 AHL season. Bowness had the opportunity to return to the NHL as head coach of the Boston Bruins during the 1991-92 season, coaching his first game with the Bruins on October 3, 1991. Bowness coached his first playoff game on April 19, 1992, losing 3-2 to Buffalo. They went on to win the series in 7-games and sweep the Montreal Canadians to reach the Wales Conference finals. Their they were swept by the Pittsburgh Penguins who eventually won the Stanley Cup.
After one season with the Bruins, Bowness was not brought back as the Bruins replaced him with Brian Sutter. Rick Bowness became the Ottawa Senators first head coach! Coaching an expansion team is never easy, especially one where the talent was thin. Ottawa finished with a league worst 10-70-4, earning 24 points. Bowness returned the following seasons and increased the team’s standing by 13 points but still finished last place in the NHL with 37 points.
Bowness returned for a third year in a lockout season, finishing 9-34-5 in a shortened 48-game schedule, finishing in last place for the third straight season. In his fourth year, Ottawa started strong with a 6-5-0 record in 11 games but after suffering an 8-game losing streak, Bowness was relieved of his duties and replaced by Dave Allison.
After his departure from Ottawa, Bowness coached for the New York Islanders for two seasons, the Phoenix Coyotes for 20 games, the Dallas Stars for three seasons and most recently with the Winnipeg Jets for two seasons before his retirement.
