ON THE BENCH
Jacques Martin (1996-2002)
Jacques Martin joined the Ottawa Senators midway through the 1995-96 season when the Senators had a record of 8-35-1. Jacques coached his first game for the Senators on January 24, 1996, losing 4-3 to the Pittsburgh Penguins. He earned his first win on January 29, 1996 by defeating his former team, the St. Louis Blues, 4-2. The team had a slight improvement, going 10-24-4 over the final 38 games and missed the playoffs.
Significant improvement occurred in the 1996-97 season when Ottawa finished 31-36-15, making the playoffs for the first time in team history. They lost to the heavily favored Buffalo Sabres in overtime in game seven to be eliminated in the first round.
The Senators continued to improve the following season, finishing with a record of 34-33-15 and making the playoffs once again. The eight-seeded Senators defeated the New Jersey Devils in the first round, in six games before falling to the Washington Capitals in the second round in five games.
The Sens had the best record in the Northeast Division during the 1998-99 season, going 44-23-15, with Jacques Martin winning the Jack Adams Award as the best head coach in the NHL. Unfortunately, this momentum did not translate in the post-season as the Senators were swept by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round.
Ottawa finished second in the Northeast Division during the 1999-2000 season with a record of 41-28-11-2. They faced their hated rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs and fell to them in six games during the first round. The following year, Ottawa finished strong with a record of 48-21-9-4 for a second Northeast Division title. Like the previous season, they faced their rivals the Maple Leafs in the playoffs and this time faced a sweep at the hands of Toronto.
The Senators faced some adversity during the 2001-02 season as the club traded Alexei Yashin to the New York Islanders during the off-season. Jacques Martin coached the Senators for their first 80 games, going 38-26-9-7. Martin stepped aside for the final two games of the season, allowing assistant coach Roger Neilson to coach the team.
