ON THE BENCH

Jacques Martin (2001-2004)

After stepping away from the bench to allow Roger Neilson to coach his 1,000th NHL game, Jacques Martin returned to the bench for the playoffs. Ottawa defeated the Flyers in the opening round, winning the series in five games to set up another match-up with division rival Toronto Maple Leafs. Ottawa forced the series to a game seven but lost once again to the provincial rivals.

The Senators had the league best record in the 2002-03 season, winning the President’s Trophy for the first time in team history with a record of 52-21-8-1, for 113 points. In the post-season the Senators defeated the New York Islanders in the first round in five games, followed by a second round victory over the Philadelphia flyers in six games. Ottawa reached the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in club history. Falling behind three games to one against the New Jersey Devils, the Senators rallied back to force a game seven but lost the series on a late third period goal.

The Senators were considered favorites to win the Stanley Cup during the 2003-04 season, ending the season with 102 points. They faced the Toronto Maple Leafs for the fourth time in the opening playoff round in five years. The Leafs managed to eliminate the Senators yet again in seven games.

Frustrated with the same results, the Senators fired Jacques Martin on April 22, 2004.
