Game Day – Sens @ Penguins – Oct 28, 2023

History of the Jersey Nameplate

The Pittsburgh Penguins hold a long tradition of changing their jerseys every couple of years. They also hold a prestigious accolade of being one of the first teams to reintroduce nameplates to the back of their black jerseys.  The New York Americans experimented with them in 1926, but were ultimately told it did not look good. In 1970, the Penguins decided to try nameplates again to much higher success. It wasn’t until 1977, when it expanded to all teams where, home teams could wear names at their discretion and road teams could ask permission from the team they were visiting.

Nameplate are now worn on all hockey jerseys.

GAME DAY REPORT

Senators All-Time Record vs. Pittsburgh: 41-52-9-9

It’s a battle between bottom tier teams with an identical record of 3-4-0. Both teams are trying to hit the .500 mark to close out October. Ottawa is riding a 3 game losing streak and facing stiff competition from an aging, but very skilled, Pittsburgh Penguins. While Ottawa ranks higher in goals scored (4th in the league) compared to Pittsburgh, they are much lower in the league in goals allowed.

This will require a full team effort as the Sens will be without defencemen Erik Brannstrom, who suffered an injury in the Islanders game, Thomas Chabot who has a fractured hand and is expected to miss 4 to 6 weeks, and Artem Zub who still recovering from an upper-body injury. The Sens have recalled defencemen Tyler Kleven and Nikolas Matinpalo from Belleville.
