Game Day – Sens @ Hurricanes – Oct 11, 2023

Decades long mystery around 1st NHL regular season goal finally solved

For many decades, ever since the National Hockey League’s first opening night, no experts had been able to say with certainty where the very first NHL puck drop took place or who recorded the league’s first goal.

Two host cities were scheduled to play on the same evening of December 19, 1917. In Ottawa, the  Ottawa Hockey Club vs. the Montreal Canadiens and in Montreal, the Montreal Wanderers vs. the Toronto Hockey Club. The Ottawa game was scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m., but the official start time of the other game had remained unknown until new evidence surfaced in 2017.

A  long-overlooked Montreal newspaper had finally provided details where the first-ever NHL puck-drop took place and the league’s first goal scorer. While most Montreal newspapers didn’t report the scheduled start time, the digitized French-language daily “Le Canada” published an advertisement promoting the opening face-off at 8:15 p.m. This confirms Montreal (which was already known as the birthplace of hockey) is also where NHL players went head to head for the very first time and the first recorded goal was scored.

The NHL’s inaugural scorer? A Wanderers defenceman named Dave Ritchie, who ended the 1917-18 season playing for Ottawa after the Wanderers’ rink burned down and the team folded.
