The Ottawa Senators won the President’s Trophy, awarded to the team with the NHL’s best regular season record. The Senators (51-21-8-1) clinched the league’s best record for that season. At that time, the team finishing first overall has won three of the last four Stanley Cups. Giving Sens fans lots to look forward to. Ottawa had also set franchise records with 111 points and 51 victories that season.

The team that won the trophy, first awarded after the 1985-86 season, got a bonus of $100,000 while the players get a bonus of $250,000 to be divided among them.

Sens Lose 4-0 to the Rangers.

Sens played a tight game against the league leading Rangers but the scoring depth and stellar defense work was too much for the Senators. Korpisalo made several great saves in the loss. Down 2-0 after 2 periods the Sens were managing to keep it close but the Rangers opened the scoring in the third to put the Sens out of it.
