Game Day – Sens vs. Canadiens – Jan 23, 2024

Habs Nickname a result of an error?

The “Habs” nickname might have been the result of an error in 1924. The first man to refer to the team as the Habs was Tex Rickard, the founder of the National Hockey League and the owner of Madison Square Garden. Rickard apparently told a reporter that the “H” in the logo on the Canadiens’ jerseys stood for habitants, which is not true. The distinctive C-wrapped-around-H logo stands for the hockey team’s official name, le Club de Hockey Canadien. The “H” stands for “hockey.”

Shane Pinto has returned to the lineup after a lengthy suspension and picked up an assist, in his 100th career game facing the Flyers. Montreal, meanwhile, was thrashed by the Bruins on Saturday 9-4 and will be looking to re-establish some dominance in the Bell Centre.

Statistically, Ottawa scores more goals on average per game while Montreal sits at the bottom of the league in scoring. Montreal allows lots of goals against, but so does Ottawa. Game recap – Jan 21 – sens vs. flyers

Senators stage comeback to win on the road against Flyers 5-3

Philadelphia jumped onto a quick start, scoring 2 goals but Ottawa did something they have struggled to do in the past, staged a successful comeback, scoring four unanswered goals to secure the victory.

Quick Sens Highlights:

  • The game started with a fluky goal after many players thought the puck was secured on goaltender Mads Sogaard, however the puck had deflected to the corner of the ice where Zamula quickly shot it into an empty net. After a quick review, the goal stood. Zamula scored another goal shortly thereafter ending the period 2-0 for the Flyers.
  • Former Flyers player, Zach MacEwen scored the 2nd goal of this career, in the second period, unassisted to cut the lead in half.
  • Flyers scored a power play goal 6 minutes later to establish a 2 goal lead, once again.
  • Tim Stutzle scored his 9th of the season, assisted by Thomas Chabot and the returning Shane Pinto, to end the period 3-2 for the Flyers.
  • Three minutes in the 3rd period, Claude Giroux scored his 14th of the season, assisted by Jacob Bernard-Docker and Brady Tkachuk to tie the game.
  • Vladimir Tarasenko scored his 12th of the season, assisted by Mathieu Joseph to take the first lead in the game.
  • Tim Stutzle scored his 10th of the season, and second of the evening, into an empty net, assisted by Jakob Chychrun.
  • Shane Pinto returned to the line-up after serving a 41-game suspension and also played his 100th NHL career game.
  • Mads Sogaard recorded his 1st win of the season, making 22 saves on 25 shots for 3.00 GAA and .880 SV%.
