Origins of the Carolina Hurricanes

Why Hurricanes? While North Carolina is known for many things, North Carolina isn’t the number one state for hurricanes in the United States. In fact they are ranked 4th most likely to be impacted by a hurricane. 

It was announced in March 1997, that the Hartford Whalers would move to Carolina in time for the start of the season in October. As a result of the tight timeline, owner Peter Karmanos, Jr. named the team himself rather than hold a contest. The club was named for the storm system that frequently hit the area.

Last Time vs. Canes: Sens falls to Hurricanes in season opener 5-3

Last Time: On October 11, the Ottawa Senators lost the season opener on the road to the Hurricanes. That game marked the debut of Joonas Korpisalo, Vladimir Tarasenko and Dominik Kubalik with the Ottawa Senators.

This Time: The Senators are bouncing around the .500 mark trading wins and loses but are looking to turn their fortunes around against a Hurricanes team that has lost 4 consecutive games. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes know the best remedy to end a losing streak — defeat the Ottawa Senators.

Statistically, Ottawa scores more goals and allows less goals than the Hurricanes which might bode well for them however, they are worst on special teams than the Hurricanes.

Game recap – Dec 9 – sens vs. Red Wings

Senators defeat the Red Wings soundly 5-1

With the series tied the Ottawa Senators entered Little Caesars Arena ready to pounce and pounce they did. The game was never close as Ottawa dominated the entire game. Things became heated when a bizarre exchange between Mathieu Joseph and Parker Kelly left Dylan Larkin unconscious on the ice for several minutes. David Perron charged at Artem Zub with an intent to injure and was ejected from the game.

Quick Sens Highlights:

• Claude Giroux opened up the scoring with his 9th goal of the season to take an early lead 1-0.
• Patrick Kane scored his first goal this season in his second game with the Red Wings to tie the game.
• Vladimir Tarasenko, Dominik Kubalik and Tim Stutzle all scored in the 2nd period.
• Jake Sanderson added a final goal in the 3rd period to take the game 5-1.
• The following players recorded assists: Vladimir Tarasenko, Claude Giroux, Jakob Chychrun (2), Mathieu Joseph, Drake Batherson, and Artem Zub.
• Joonas Korpisalo recorded the win making 30 saves with a 1.00 GAA and a .968 SV%.

Happy 28th Birthday to Max Veronneau, an undrafted NHL player that played two seasons with the Ottawa Senators as a depth player, amassing 16 games with 2 goals and 2 assists. Max signed as a free agent with Ottawa on March 12, 2019.

🏢 Bell Sensplex opens in Ottawa
In 2004, The Ottawa Community Ice Partners (OCIP), in partnership with the City of Ottawa, announce the official opening of the Bell Sensplex, the city’s newest state-of-the art recreation facility. The facility features four ice-rinks surfaces (one international), a first for the city of Ottawa, and an indoor field.
