Game Day – Sens vs. Canucks – Nov 9, 2023

Presidents’ Trophy Trauma

The Presidents’ Trophy had been awarded 37 times, however only eight of those teams went on to win the Stanley Cup. Since the 2007-08 season, only one Presidents’ Trophy winner has won a Stanley Cup, the 2012-13 Chicago Blackhawks.

From 2008-2009 to 2011-2012, three of the four Presidents’ Trophy winners were eliminated in the first round. The only exception was the 2010-11 Vancouver Canucks who lost to the Bruins in the Stanley Cup Final.

Currently, Vancouver is 4 points back from being in a tie for the Presidents’ Trophy.

ON THIS DAY IN SENS HISTORY – Nov 8th

Senators suspend star Yashin for the season
In 1999, Ottawa General Manager, Marshall Johnston, announced that Alexei Yashin had been suspended by the club for the balance of the season, including the playoffs.  The suspension was due to a contract hold-out by Yashin who wanted to renegotiate his existing contract to be in line with the salaries of top stars.   Senators management believed Yashin was obligated to deliver a full season of play under the terms and conditions of his contract.

🧾 Record set for scoring 2 goals in 4 seconds
In 2019, Ottawa scored two goals in fewer than five seconds for the first time in franchise history, as forwards Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Vladislav Namestnikov combine to score 0:04 apart in a 4-1 home win over Carolina, to best the team’s previous high mark for fastest two goals by four seconds. It was the 10th instance in NHL history of a team combining to score twice in four seconds.

😷 COVID hits Connor Brown – ends playing streak
In 2021, Connor Brown missed Ottawa’s game at Boston (3-2 loss) after entering COVID-19 protocol the previous day which ended his consecutive games playing streak at 384, which was the fourth longest active streak in the league at the time.
