Game Day – Sens vs. Coyotes – Mar 1, 2024

The Pre-Game

Jets Relocate to Phoenix

The franchise relocated to Arizona before the 1996–97 season and became known as the Phoenix Coyotes.

Led by the play of left wing Keith Tkachuk, right wing Shane Doan, and defenseman Teppo Numminen, the renamed Coyotes qualified for the postseason in each of their first four seasons in Phoenix, losing in the first round on each occasion. Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky became a minority owner of the team in 2000 and became the Coyotes’ head coach in 2005. Phoenix failed to finish any higher than second-to-last in its division during Gretzky’s tenure, and he stepped down in September 2009 soon after the Coyotes—who continued to lose money after their move to Phoenix—filed for bankruptcy protection. Two months later the bankrupt team was purchased by the NHL. Despite this turmoil the Coyotes won 50 games during the 2009–10 season (the team’s highest win total since joining the NHL 30 years earlier) to end a six-year play-off drought. In 2011–12 the Coyotes won the first division title in franchise history. The team followed that feat by beating the Blackhawks in a thrilling first-round play-off series wherein five of the six games were decided in overtime to claim the franchise’s first postseason series victory since its relocation from Winnipeg. The Coyotes won another play-off series before ultimately being eliminated by the Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference finals.

Game recap – Feb 27 – sens vs. Predators

Sens fall to red-hot Predators 4-1, who extend winning streak to 6 games.

The Senators played their second game in a back-to-back series and suffered another loss, this time to the red-hot Nashville Predators. In a game very similar to the previous match up, the Predators scored twice in the first 10 minutes and never let go of the lead during the game. Ottawa managed to score only once during the game despite having so close chances.

Quick Sens Highlights:

  • Nashville scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the 1st period to take a 2-0 lead. Does that sound familiar, its the exact same result as the previous night’s start against Washington.
  • Drake Batherson scored his 20th of the season, to cut the lead in half. The goal was assisted by Jake Sanderson and Tim Stutzle. That would be the last of the scoring for the Senators on this evening.
  • Nashville scored once in the 2nd period and once again in the 3rd period to win the game 4-1.
  • Joonas Korpisalo earned the loss, making 32 saves on 36 shots for a 4.00 GA and .889 SV%.

ON THIS DAY IN SENS HISTORY

🏒 Matthew Highmore makes his NHL debut
In 2018, Matthew Highmore made his NHL debut with the Chicago Blackhawks vs. San Jose.

👔 Bye Bye Boucher, Hello Crawford
In 2019, Head Coach Guy Boucher is relieved of his duties with 18 games remaining in the regular season. Boucher, who guided the team to the Eastern Conference Final in his first season behind the team’s bench in the 2016-17 season, concluded his Senators coaching tenure with a record of 94-108-26 with the club.

His 94 victories saw him rank 5th among the franchise’s all-time head coaches upon his dismissal. Associate coach Marc Crawford was named the team’s interim head coach and ultimately led the team to a record of 7-10-1 which included his becoming only the 22nd head coach in NHL history to earn a 550th victory on March 3 at Florida.

🐍Batherson scores in 6th consecutive game
In 2021, with the first multi-goal game of his NHL career, Ottawa’s Drake Batherson equaled what, at the time, was the Senators’ franchise record for consecutive games with a goal when he earned at least one tally in his 6th straight game in Ottawa’s 5-1 win vs. Calgary. The game saw him become the first Ottawa skater aged 22 or younger to reach the mark after Daniel Alfredsson, Dany Heatley, Jason Spezza and Bob Kudelski jointly held the record, before all were eclipsed later in the season by Connor Brown.

⇉👑 Korpisalo traded to Kings
In 2023, Joonas Korpisalo was traded to the Los Angeles King with defenceman Vladislav Gavrikov for a conditional 1st-round pick in the 2023 NHL draft and a 3rd round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.
