Game Day – Sens vs. Islanders – Nov 24, 2023

We Want Fish sticks

The Islanders of the mid-1990s misread a marketing trend. Between January 1995 and August 1997, 25 professional teams unveiled new logos, uniforms, or both. Sales of licensed NHL products were projected to jump by 200 million dollars and the Islanders wanted to take advantage of the trend.

The introduction of the fisherman logo was met with immediate outrage. Fans and opposing teams would mock the team by calling it the fish sticks logo. The team had failed to consult any groups to test the logo out to see if it would succeed. The logo had a strong resemblance to a fish stick brand logo Gorton’s Fisherman. The jerseys would only last 2 seasons before the team went back to their classic winning jersey.

Last season the NY Islanders revived the Fisherman’s jersey as their third jersey after large crowd demands wanted their fish sticks back.
