GAME DAY REPORT

Senators vs. Islanders
Last season: The Senators faced the New York Islanders three times last season with the Islanders taking the series 2-1. It started with Ottawa succumbing to a 3rd straight loss with a defeat to the Islanders on Oct 26, losing 3-2. Then, on November 24th, Ottawa was riding a winning streak when it came to a screeching halt following a 5-3 loss to the Islanders. Ottawa’s lone victory came on March 16th when Brady Tkachuk scored a hat-trick to lift the Senators over the Islanders 4-3.
Game Day: The Islanders defeated Pittsburgh in a shootout to garner a victory while Ottawa took a devastating loss to the Sabres. Statistically, the Islanders have poor special teams, ranking in the bottom of the league in Power Play and Penalty Kill. They also are the second worst team in the league in allowing more goals per game. Meanwhile, Ottawa is 8th in the league in scoring goals and despite a slight drop, remains on the top of the league with its power play.

Drafted in 2019 during the 2nd round – 32nd overall by Ottawa, the Franklin Square, NW native, is enjoying his fifth year in the NHL and with the Senators. Pinto played a handful of games during his first two seasons before playing all 82 games during the 2022-23 season. After missing 41 games last season due to being suspended, Pinto returned and did not miss a single game, recording 9 goals and 18 assists for 27 points.

LOCKER ROOM – JERSEY #12 & 57
A double dose of jersey numbers today since they are so closely tied together. Shane Pinto made his debut with the Senators in the 2021-22 season wearing jersey #12 however, upon the Senators acquiring Alex DeBrincat, Pinto “gave up” his number to him. Pinto instead took jersey #57 for the 2022-23 season. This is where things get VERY INTERESTING.
The Senators traded DeBrincat during the off-season and Shane Pinto had not accepted the Senators qualifying offer, so he remained a restricted agent without a contract. Since, technically, Pinto was not under contract for the 2023-24 season, Mark Kastelic took it upon himself to take jersey #12 away from Pinto to start the season.
Pinto was later suspended 41 games, signed a 2-year contract with the Senators and returned in January 2024 using jersey #57 again. The jersey number may be cursed because the Senators traded away Kastelic in the off-season, along with Joonas Korpisalo for Linus Ullmark. Shane Pinto was able to return to jersey #12 this season and I think he will think twice before giving it up again!
