Game Day – Sens @ Islanders – Oct 26, 2023

D Stands For Dynasty

The New York Islanders are often looked at as the “other team” in New York. Yet this franchise managed to not only win 4 Stanley Cups in a row, but adding to that great accomplishment, they’ve also secured the record of winning 19 straight playoff series from 1980 to 1984.

The next closest record is held by the Montreal Canadiens with 10 series wins in a row (1956-1960). This however, was accomplished in a 6 team league that only required 2 series victories to win the Stanley Cup.

The 1980-84 New York Islanders are truly a Dynasty.

Game recap – Oct 24 – sens vs. Sabres

Sens lose back-to-back home games in defeat of Sabres 6-4

The night started of magical with the retirement of Craig Anderson with the Ottawa Senators which included a moving video tribute, his family assisting with the ceremonial puck drop and Anderson receiving his alumni Senators jacket from Chris Neil and Chris Philips. Unfortunately, the magic ended after the puck drop, as the Sabres scored 3 unanswered goals before Jakob Chychrun responded, but then the Sabres scored 2 more goals. While it seemed the night was over, Ottawa had a small spurt of energy scoring 3 goals in the last 5 minutes but it was not enough to turn this game around.

Quick Sens Highlights:

  • Vladimir Tarasenko, Mathieu Joseph, Jakob Chychrun, and Josh Norris scored goals.
  • The Sens recorded assists from Tarasenko, Joseph, Ridly Greig, Thomas Chabot, Jake Sanderson, Travis Hamonic, Tim Stutzle and Drake Batherson.
  • Anton Forsberg played the first 2 periods, letting in 5 goals and making 13 saves, resulting in a 7.50 GAA and .722 SV%. Joonas Korpisalo came in relief at the start of the 3rd period making 5 saves.
  • Before the game, Craig Anderson signed a one-day contract in order to retire with the Ottawa Senators.
  • The unusual 6:45pm start time was due to the NHL’s Frozen Frenzy, an attempt to provide some type of media coverage to every game on Tuesday, as all 32-clubs played yesterday on staggered start times.
  • History was made yesterday, as for the first time in Senators history, NHL goaltenders (Forsberg and Luukkonen) took part in the ceremonial puck drop.
  • Brady Tkachuk was assessed an Instigator penalty at 16:50 of the 3rd period which typically carried a one-game suspension. The Ottawa Senators appealed the automatic one-game suspension and were successful in avoiding suspension and also avoiding the $10,000 fine to D.J. Smith due to the circumstances surrounding the penalty.
