Game Day – Sens vs. Jets – Jan 20, 2024

The Jets jersey

The Jets World Hockey Association days saw them change their uniforms nearly every single year. Once they reached the National Hockey League, they wore a stolen jersey template (from the New York Rangers) for an entire decade before coming up with their own (iconic) design.

The Jets made their World Hockey Association debut in the league’s inaugural season of 1972-73, taking their name from the Winnipeg Jets of the Western Canadian Hockey League (now the Western Hockey League.) The “Jets” name seemed appropriate, given that Winnipeg is host to the Royal Canadian Air Force’s Canadian Forces Base Winnipeg, but was also influenced by Jets owner Ben Hatskin’s fandom of the National Football League’s New York Jets.

GAME DAY REPORT

All-Time vs. Jets: 41-28-2

The Ottawa Senators are facing the Winnipeg Jets for the first time this season. Happy with their 6-2 win over division rival Montreal Canadians, the Senators now face a hot Winnipeg Jets who sits first in the Central division. The match-up will be part of the Scotiabank Hockey Day In Canada event which will feature a PWHL game between New York and Boston before starting their coverage of the Senators/Jets game. The day continues with coverage of three additional match-ups which feature: Toronto vs. Vancouver, Boston vs. Montreal, and Edmonton vs. Calgary.

If there’s one bright light for the Senators, it’s that they are slowly climbing out of the basement with their stats, even when losing games. They went from league worst on penalty kill and allowing more goals than any other team to 30th in the league. While it’s not a major jump, it’s showing that they are improving in key areas. Statistically, the Winnipeg Jets allow the least amount of goals in the league while Ottawa sits in the top 3rd of the league with scoring the most goals.
