Game Day – Sens vs. Red Wings – Jan 7, 2025

Pre-GAME

It’s been a long road trip but it finally comes to an end tonight against the Detroit Red Wings. The Senators will next return home to face the Sabres and then jump on a plane to Pittsburgh before returning home again to face Dallas (once again), this time on home ice.

ERRATUM: In the last post, SensFanatics.com identified the fact the Senators lost to the St. Louis Blues twice last year and then posed the question, can the Senators defeat them this year? Well, they already did, back in October, the Senators slaughtered the Blues 8-1 in Ottawa.

THANK YOU FOR BEING A SENS: This new segment will focus on players who left the Ottawa Senators last season. So, sing the title together like the “Golden Girl” theme song in saying “Thank You For Being a Sens”.

TO WATCH: Sens vs. Red Wings at 7:00pm on TSN5

THANK YOU FOR BEING A SENS

Jakob Chychrun

Jakob Chychrun joined the Senators on March 1, 2023 when the Coyotes traded him to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a conditional 1st-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, a conditional 2nd-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and a 2nd-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. A hefty price but the Senators where looking for scoring on the D-line and Chychrun was a heavily sought after player at the time.

Chychrun played 12 games with the Senators following the trade, recording 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points before being injured. This was the concern of many, the fact that Chychrun had never played a full season with a club before, always succumbing to injury. This is something Chychrun proved naysayers wrong last year when he played all 82 games for the Senators, scoring 14 goals and recording 27 assists for 41 points.

At the risk of losing Chychrun to free agency the following year, without recouping any assets, and with the fact that Senators management was looking for an at-home defenceman to protect the net, the Senators opted to traded Chychrun on free agency. He was traded by Ottawa on July 1, 2024 to the Washington Capitals for Nick Jensen and a 3rd round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

With that we say to Jakob Chychrun…. Thank You For Being A Sens!
