ON THE BENCH
Bryan Murray (2005-2007)
Bryan Murray started his coaching career with the Washington Capitals, coaching the team for 9 seasons and bringing the Capitals to the playoffs on 7 of those seasons! He joined the Detroit Red Wings during the 1990-91 season and coached the team for 3 years, making the playoffs each year. He was named the General Manager during the 1993-94 season when the team announced Scotty Bowman as head coach.
Murray was appointed the General Manager of the expansion team Florida Panthers in 1994. The young team made it to the Stanley Cup Finals and Murray was selected as NHL Executive of the Year. He also coached Florida during part of the 1997-98 season.
He joined the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim as head coach in the 2001-02 season and became the team’s General Manager from 2002 to 2004, seeing the Ducks reach the Stanley Cups Finals. After a disappointing 2003-04 season, he resigned as General Manager to accept the position of head coach of the Ottawa Senators, replacing Jacques Martin.
During the 2005-06 season, the Senators finished 1st in the Northeast and were eliminated in the Conference Finals against Buffalo. The following season, the Senators finished 2nd in the Northeast and proceeded to make the Stanley Cups Finals for the first time in team history. The team lost to Anaheim in five games. With the firing of John Muckler on June 18, 2007, Murray was promoted to General Manager of the Senators with assistant coach John Paddock taking over as head coaching duties.
