Game Day – Sens vs. Sabres – Dec 31, 2023

a Sabre

A heavy military sword with a long cutting edge and, often, a curved blade. Most commonly a cavalry weapon, the sabre was derived from a Hungarian cavalry sword introduced from the Orient in the 18th century; also a light fencing weapon developed in Italy in the 19th century for dueling. The military sabre had been relegated to a ceremonial role by the 20th century, while the fencing sabre had become one of the sport’s standard weapons.

The modern fencing sabre is no heavier than a foil—up to 500 grams (about 17.5 ounces) in weight—but it is slightly shorter—105 centimeters (3 feet 5 inches) overall and 88 centimeters (2 feet 11 inches) in the blade. The blade is V-shaped, with cutting edges along its entire front and along about one-third of its back from the tip. It is rigid on its cutting edges but flexible on its flat sides. The handguard curves back to the pommel, protecting the knuckles.

GAME DAY REPORT

Last Time vs. Sabres: Sens lose back-to-back home games in defeat of Sabres 6-4

Last Time: On Oct 24th, the Ottawa Senators celebrated the retirement of Craig Anderson prior to their match up against the Buffalo Sabres. The night was emotional with video tributes, the ceremonial puck drop performed by Craig Anderson and his family followed by Anderson receiving the Senators alumni jacket from Chris Neil and Chris Phillips. Unfortunately the magic ended once the puck dropped as Ottawa lost 6-4.

This Time: Both teams are bottom dwellers with Ottawa trying to climb out of the 8th spot for most of the season. It seems that with every step forward, they take one backwards. The Sabres sit in the 7th spot with 1 win more than Ottawa but have lost their last 2 games and Ottawa has games in hand. A big win by Ottawa to end the year is needed to set the tone for an aggressive January schedule that will see Ottawa play another 15 games in the month including starting things off with a West Coast road trip that needs to be better than the pre-holiday road trip which saw Ottawa go 0-5!

Statistically, Ottawa has a better power play percentage, slightly ahead of Sabres but after the loss to the Devils, the penalty kill dropped back to league worst! Ottawa does score more goals on average than the Buffalo Sabres however they also allow more goals on average.

Game recap – Dec 29 – sens vs. devils

Ottawa ends winning ways with defeat at hands of Devils 6-2

This one was not really close as the Devils dominated the majority of the game. In what was to be a true test to determine if the improvements made in the Penguins and Maple Leafs wins were sufficient to compete with higher level opponents, Ottawa crashed against the New Jersey Devils.

Quick Sens Highlights:

  • Drake Batherson scored his 14th of the seasons mid-way through the first period giving Ottawa the lead but New Jersey scored two goals at the end the period to make it 2-1.
  • The 2nd period featured two additional goals by New Jersey, now scoring 4 unanswered, to end the period 4-1.
  • Another New Jersey goal in the 3rd period put the game beyond reach, even if Jacob Bernard-Docker did score his 3rd of the season. Another New Jersey goal to end the period ended the game 6-2.
  • Brady Tkachuk, Angus Crookshank, and Erik Brannstrom recorded assists in the game.
  • Joonas Korpisalo recorded the loss making 24 saves with a 6 GAA and a .800 SV%.

ON THIS DAY IN SENS HISTORY

🎫 Ottawa fan base responds!
In 1990, the Ottawa Senators sold 9,100 Civic Centre seats for the 1992-93 season in 10 days, raising $17 million.

🏒 Drake Batherson point streak!
In 2022, Drake Batherson registered an assist in Detroit to become the 3rd player in franchise history to record a point streak of at least 13 games joining Dany Heatley (22 games in 2005-06 and 16 games in 2006-07) and Marian Hossa (13 games in 2002-03).

by the numbers – jersey # 4

Continuing our trend of retired jerseys, let’s talk about jersey #4 which is synonymous with one Senators defenceman — none other than Chris Phillips. Phillips wore #4 from his debut season in 1997 until 2016. No other player wore the number after his retirement in 2016 and no one ever will as jersey #4 was retired on February 18, 2020.

Did you know two Ottawa Senators players wore jersey #4 before Chris Phillips?

Brad Shaw wore #4 during the 1992-93 inaugural season and up to the 1994-95 season. The following year Sean Hill took over the number from 1995 to 1997 before Chris Phillips took over the number from 1997 to 2016.
