Trade Deadline Days

Trade deadline has historically been a very exciting day for NHL fans. This year 17 trades occurred on trade deadline day. The record for deadline deals is 32 trades shared by two dates; March 21,2022 and February 24, 2020.

March 21, 2022 – notable players traded: Marc-Andre Fleury (to Minnesota), Artturi Lehkonen (to Colorado), Jake Walman (to Detroit), Andrew Copp (to NY Rangers), Kaapo Kahkonen (to San Jose). The 2022 NHL Trade Deadline will go down as the one that saw the voided Evgenii Dadonov trade between the Vegas Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks – eventually leading to the Ottawa Senators losing a first-round pick for not submitting the player’s no-trade list to Vegas.

Feb 24, 2020 – notable players traded: Vincent Trocheck (to Carolina), Barclay Goodrow (to Tampa Bay), Evan Rodrigues (to Pittsburgh), Jean-Gabriel Pageau (to NY Islanders), Mike Green (to Edmonton). The actual deadline day itself lacked high quality, but it made up for quantity with 55 players moved – tied for the most in history with 2010. Looking back, Vincent Trocheck was the top player moved after going from Florida to Carolina, a team that helped him spice up his career after a few difficult seasons with the Panthers. Jean-Gabriel Pageau has had a solid few seasons with the Islanders and was especially valuable during the team’s playoff runs in 2020 and 2021, while Evan Rodrigues has proven to be a decent depth scoring option with Pittsburgh, Colorado and Florida the past few years.

GAME DAY REPORT

Sens vs. Sharks

Last time: On January 13th, the Ottawa Senators ended their losing streak by defeating the San Jose Sharks 5-4. Tim Stutzle recorded 4 assists, earning the 1st star in the game.

Game Day: Ottawa is facing a 6 game losing streak and has not won a single western road game all season long. The Senators would love to end the road trip with their first victory and once again use the San Jose Sharks to end a losing streak. Meanwhile, San Jose is sporting a 9 game losing streak and would love to beat Ottawa to earn a victory. Both teams are at the bottom of their respective division turning tonight’s contest into a battle of worst vs. worst to determine who is the best of the worst!

It’s been a tough season to find opponents who are statistically worse than Ottawa but not so much today. San Jan ranks at the bottom of the league in penalty kill, average goals scored per game and allowing the most goals per game than all teams in the NHL. While Ottawa’s penalty kill is also pretty terrible and they also allow goals in bunches per game, they do rank in the top half of the league in scoring.
