The Senators closed the year with a big win in Minnesota, defeating the Wild 3-1 with goalie of the future Leevi Merilainen. With this victory, they stop any potential talk of a losing streak and add two more points to this extended 9-game road trip. The Senators have now collected 8 points in 6 games. The New Year kicks off with games against Dallas, St. Louis and Detroit before returning home.

Senators vs. Stars

Last Season: The Senators battled the Dallas Stars twice last season, splitting the series. It started with a 5-4 loss on December 15th which extended the Sens losing ways to 3 games. Then, on February 22nd, they defeated the first place Stars 4-1 to even out the series.

Game Day: A win in Minnesota stopped any potential slide but things don’t get any easier as they near the end of the road trip with a tough Dallas team. Dallas won an easy victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Dec 31st.

The Ottawa Senators record for the 2010-11 season was 32-40-10, which resulted in 74 points for 5th place in the Northeast division and 26th overall in the NHL.

Season Highlights

During the off-season the Senators lost Anton Volchenkov to the New Jersey Devils however Ottawa rebounded by signing former Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Sergei Gonchar to a 3-year deal.

After falling last place in the Eastern Conference, the Senators started a rebuild, trading away veterans for draft picks. This included trading lifetime Senators like Mike Fisher to Nashville and Chris Kelly to Boston. Ottawa also traded away Jarkko Ruttu, Alex Kovalev, and Chris Campoli. On the goaltending front, Ottawa traded Brian Elliott in return for Craig Anderson, signing Anderson to a 4-year contract extension.

Coach Cory Clouston was fired at the end of the season.

2010-11 Senators Highlights

  • Most games played: Chris Phillips and Nick Foligno played 82 games.
  • Top Scorer: Jason Spezza scored 21 goals.
  • Top Helper: Jason Spezza registered 36 assists.
  • Top Producer: Jason Spezza recorded 57 points in 62 games.
  • Top PIM: Chris Neil had 210 penalty minutes in 80 games.
  • Top Goalie: Brian Elliott played 43 games for 2,293 mins with a result of 13-19-8 including 3 shutouts with a 3.19 GAA and .894 SV%.

LOCKER ROOM – JERSEY #29

Jersey #29 was actually worn frequently in Senators history but for short periods of time by players. It has a good mix of veterans, prospects and even goaltenders. Players such as Martin Gerber, Johnny Oduya and even Michale Amadio wore this number for a few games back in the 2020-21 season.

ON THIS DAY IN SENATORS HISTORY

🎂HAPPY BIRTHDAY ZENON KONOPKA🥳
Konopoka celebrates his 44th birthday today! The Niagara on the Lake, Ontario native went undrafted in the NHL, instead making his debut with the Anaheim Ducks during an affiliated call-up, playing 23 games with them. He made the Tampa Bay Lightning roster out of training camp in 2009 and also signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Islanders.

Konopoka played 346 NHL games, scoring 12 goals for 18 assists, recording 30 points. He played one season with the Senators in 2011-12, playing in 55 games recording 3 goals and 2 assists.

In 2019, Darren Archibald and Anders Nilsson were acquired from Vancouver in exchange for goaltender Mike McKenna, forward Tom Pyatt and the Senators’ 6th-round pick in 2019. Archibald played 3 games for the Senators before ending his NHL career with 55 games. Nilsson also ended his NHL career with the Senators, playing 24 games in the 2018-19 season and another 20 games the following year.

In 2016, Anton Forsberg recorded his first NHL win with Columbus Blue Jackets against Washington.
